This is a Grand Army of the Republic belt buckle. The GAR was a veterans organization that was formed by Benjamin Stephenson on 6 April, 1866. It was composed of Union veterans of the American Civil War. In the beginning the GAR was available as a way for veterans to meet and stay in contact with each other after the war ended. They soon grew into one of the most powerful political organizations of their time. The belt buckle is made of brass. The buckle face measures 2 3/4" wide and 2" high. It has the GAR medallion in the center and the letters G A R surrounding it. These were pretty common at one time, but not so much now. This type buckle was worn with white cloth belts or white leather belts. The buckle retains the original gilt and still displays quite well. This will look great in your GAR collection!
