This is a wrought iron grave marker by an unknown maker from the 1890's-1900's time period. These markers had a two fold purpose, to identify a grave of an American soldier, and also to hold a small American flag on Decoration Day. Later on that day would be called Memorial Day. This marker is made of wrought iron and has a weathered, aged patina to it. The front of the marker is made like a scroll with a spread winged eagle at the top. This style of eagle was very popular during the late 1800's into the early 1900's. The letters U.S.A. are raised in the center of the scroll, and a military type shield is at the bottom of the the scroll. The back of the marker is blank, having no makers information. These marker were usually found at the foot of a veterans grave and was used to display a small American flag on Memorial Day and other holidays. I believe this one is from the Spanish American War or World War I period.
