This is a United Confederate Veterans grouping from the state of Virginia, circa 1900 - 1920. The grouping consists of a single sided Confederate battle flag, Stetson Bowler hat, a hat wreath and a Virginia state seal button. The single sided Confederate battle flag is linen and measures approximately 18" high and 36" wide. It appears this was intended to be used as a table runner and is from the 1930's - 1950's. The colors are still very vibrant and this little banner displays well. There is no damage or staining present on the parade sized flag anywhere. The bowler is made by the John B Stetson Company. It is a size 6 7/8 and shows honest wear with no damage at all. A Civil War period hat cord came on this magnificent bowler. The hat can be dated by the duplication tag found on the back side of the leather sweatband. This tag was used from 1900 through 1920. The black felt hat has no blemishes, stains or problems of any kind. The black ribbon on the exterior is in almost mint condition, having a small amount of fraying on the edge of the bow towards the back of the hat. The hat has a Maltese cross shaped vent in the very top. The wide brown leather sweat band is moderately stained from wear, but has strong, unbroken stitching. Stamped into the sweatband are the logo of John B. Stetson Co./Flexible Conforming/Philadelphia, gold lettering within a gold oval of JOHN B. STETSON CO./GRAND PRIZE/1900/PARIS and another stamp of the dealer, THE GOLDEN EAGLE/Jim Sterlen's/SIGOURNEY/IOWA. The Stetson block and reorder, or "To Duplicate" tag are completely intact behind the sweatband at the rear of the hat. A hat badge wreath and a Virginia State seal button came with the hat, but are in a riker case. The badge is the standard brass laurel wreath found on hundred's of example worn by both GAR and UCV veterans. Unfortunately the pin to attach the badge to the hat is missing. The coat sized button is a domed, two piece button with the Virginia State Seal centered within an oval and the words VIRGINIA written across the top and SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS in an arc at the bottom. There is no back mark on the button. The shank is still present and straight as an arrow. There is no name in the hat, and it came into the shop with no history. While it is not identified, this grouping is obviously from a Virginia veteran and has some great display power! It will compliment any UCV collection.
