Vietnam Era US Special Forces "Lighting Team" Beret and Patch
Item #: AA3670
This is a green beret and patch made for a Lighting Team of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observation Group during the Vietnam war. MACV-SOG was activated on 24 January, 1964. Their mission was to function as a joint special operations task force as a subcomponent of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam. By 1967 MACV-SOG was commanded by a Special Forces Colonel, and was broken down into three areas of operation, Command & Control North, Central and South. This beret and patch of the Lighting Team shows it fell under operational control of Command & Control South. CCS was based out of Ban Me Thuot and operated in southern Cambodia. I have been able to find no information on the "Lighting Teams", just a couple of photos of other patches. The beret has no makers label, and I believe was made in country. As it has no size label, I'm guessing it is a size 6 1/2, no larger than a 7. The beret is in very good condition. Sewn on the lining of the beret is a MACV-SOG logo with the words LIGHTING TEAM sewn above it in yellow and the letters CCS in red in the center. The patch has the same depiction sewn onto a black background. The patch was worn on the breast pocket of the utility uniform. This Lighting Team patch measures 3 1/2" at the highest point and 3 1/4" at the widest point. It is fully machined embroidered, and features a skull wearing a green beret in the center, the words LIGHTING TEAM above in red letters with CCS in red letters below the skull. The patch is in very good condition, and looks to have never been sewn on a uniform. This would look great in any Vietnam era special operations collection or display.
