This campaign chest belonged to 1st Lieutenant Henry Yeatman Graham of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Graham was in a partnership with Henry Reardon before the war, where they operated a wine business in Cincinnati, Ohio. On 30 December, 1861, Graham was appointed a 1st Lieutenant and assigned to F company, 24th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was located at Louisville, Ky at the time after seeing service in the Cheat Mountain region of West Virginia. The 24th moved from Louisville Ky to Nashville, Tn and remained in that area until 17 March. At that time the unit was ordered to move to Pittsburg Landing, Tn. 1st Lt. Graham was in charge of F company during the march to Pittsburg Landing and also during the terrible two day fight there. Lt. Graham continued to command F company as the 24th OVI pursued and skirmished with the Confederate Army in northern Mississippi and Tennessee until 30 June, 1862. On that date Graham was appointed as the Regimental Adjutant. Graham held that position for the remainder of his term of service. The 24th was present but not engaged at the Battle of Perryville Ky. At the Battles of Stones River and Chickamauga the 24th OVI saw heavy action and suffered heavy loses at the Chickamauga. Lt Graham was recognized for his "exceptional performance" at Chickamauga and commended by the Regimental Commander. In October 1863 Lt. Graham had seen enough of the war and submitted his resignation. He returned to Cincinnati, Ohio where he again went into the wine business. This campaign chest is in it's untouched original condition. It is as solid and sturdy as the day it was built. The chest measures 26" wide, 16" high and 17" deep. Lt Graham's first and middle initials along with his last name are stenciled on the left side of the chest. On the inside of the lid his name and unit are written in ink. It comes with a bio of Graham and historical data of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This is a fantastic piece of Civil War history. You Ohio collectors out there should jump on this one!
