This is a Native American hide scraper from the 1800's. This hide scraper is made from an elk horn with a flint stone hafted to it. These scrapers were an important tool in the life of all the Native American tribes. They were often passed down from mother to daughter for generations to prepare hides for tanning. The elk horn handle provided the user with more leverage than using only a stone. This elk horn handle measures 13 3/4" in length, with the scraping end measuring 5 1/2". This scraper has a stone attached to the horn with a strip of leather. The stone measures 4 1/2" in length and 1 3/8" wide at the scraping end. The horn shows little wear from use. This would make a nice addition to any Native American collection.
