This is a Union Military Scrip note receipt issued for services rendered by a John E. Blunt dated 31 December, 1872. These notes were issued in lieu of actual money to be reimbursed at a Federal bank or military post, usually in remote areas where it was impractical to carry large sums of money. The US government agreed to pay for damages caused to or services provided to private citizens, and did so by issuing banknotes titled Union Military Scrip to the claimants. The Scrip note has a serial number, dollar amount, payee's name and reason for the payment written in by hand. A receipt was attached to the note and retained when the note was filled out and issued. This receipt is for note number 1587, and is written for twelve dollars and payable to John E. Blunt. It is dated 31 December, 1872, but doesn't state what the payment was for. This is a very interesting document that originated during the Indian Wars period. It has been placed in an acetate cover to protect it. This scrip note receipt will fit into your currency or document collection quite well.
