This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 149930 puts this one in the production year of 1863. The 7 1/2" barrel has very little left in the way of rifling, it's been fired in anger many a time! The single line Sam Colt New York address is very legible. The Colt patent mark is visible, but there are only traces of the cylinder scene left. Of the CAL .36 stamp on the left side of the trigger guard, only CAL remains. Some of the serial numbers are worn, but match except for the wedge. It is marked and from another gun. The barrel, loading lever, cylinder and frame have all turned a plum brown patina. There is a little blue still on the loading lever. The mechanics of the gun operated normally. There is no silver wash left on the back strap or trigger guard. The brass has turned a mixed golden and chocolate patina. The walnut grips retain virtually none of the original varnish. They fit the gun like a glove and have only the expected nicks after 163 years of handling. The right side of the grip has the initials JM carved into it. This is a Colt Navy revolver that was most likely used during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a nice addition to your Civil War weapons collection.
