This is a marksmanship badge from the Indian Wars period attributed to the 7th Infantry Regiment. The 7th Infantry Regiment was constituted during the War of 1812, and has served on active duty ever since, The "Cottonbalers" have served in more campaigns than any other infantry unit in the US Army. This marksmanship badge measures 11/16' wide and 11/16" high. It is nickel plated, with an enamel painted bullseye in the center and two outer rings, also painted black enamel. Affixed to the top of the target is the number 7, to represent the regiment, and at the bottom is the date of 1888. There are two loops on the reverse of the badge, but I'm not exactly sure how it mounted to the uniform. These badges were prized possessions of the soldiers, as it was one of the few ways to distinguish ones self in the regiment in those days. This one displays well and will compliment any Indian Wars collection.
