This is British Pattern 1859 cartridge box. The cartridge box measures 6 3/4" wide, 3 3/4" high and 3" deep. It is constructed of russet leather instead of the more common black bridle leather. The russet colored cartridge boxes were used by British infantry regiments serving in colonial areas, notably India and Africa, by British Volunteer rifle regiments as well as being imported for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This pattern of cartridge box can only be worn with a sling, there are no provisions to be worn on a belt. The leather is still very pliable, and shows minimal crazing along the outer flap edge only. The stitching remains very solid on the box, with the only broken spot along the left ear of the box. The closure strap is still present, as is the final used to secure the flap closed. The two jappaned roller buckle are still present and very secure to the bottom of the box. There is a very distinct shadow of a regimental badge on the front of the box. There are no makers stamps or British War Department acceptance stamps on the box. The five compartment tin, designed to hold 50 rounds of .58 caliber ammunition, is still present. This came out of a Texas collection that had an Anchor S marked Enfield rifle along with many other Confederate used items. I don't know for sure if this was used by the Confederate Army during the Civil War, but it very well could have been. This British Pattern 1859 cartridge box is russet leather is a very fine example of that pattern box, and will make an excellent addition to any collection, especially at this price!
