This is a French M26 Adrian helmet used during World War II. The French Adrian helmet was introduced in 1915, known as the M15, and was the first steel helmet used in modern warfare. With the introduction of the helmet French mortality rates in the trench warfare of WWI dropped significantly, and other waring countries developed their own steel helmets. The M15 Adrian helmet underwent several design changes, and with the last changes incorporated in 1926, it was designated as the M26 Adrian helmet. This M26 helmet has a dark appearance, and still sports the original paint inside and out. The helmet shell is practically dent free, with just a couple of very small ones on the top. There are no stress cracks in the shell either. The band around the rim retains all of the paint. The original black leather chin strap is still present and in very good condition. The front of the shell has a WWII period disk with the French Infantry insignia of the flaming bomb over the letters RF, for Republique Francais or French Republic. The dark brown liner is intact and shows minimal wear and no damage. The only flaw with the liner is the drawstring is missing. An ink stamp on the backside of the liner shows this one as a size 56. This is an excellent example of an M26 French combat helmet from WWII, and will compliment any WWII collection.
