This is an import Model 1850 Foot Officers sword from the Civil War. The sword measures 37 3/4" overall, with a 32" blade that measures 1 1/16" wide at the hilt. The blade has a stopped fuller that runs 21 5/16" long. The edge has no nicks or dings. The blade still exhibits quite a bit of shine, but is starting to develop that steel gray patina. Both sides of the blade have floral etchings, stands of arms and eagles, with a furled banner on the obverse side with the words E PLURIBUS ENUM on it. The reverse side of the blade has an etched US almost opposite of the E PLURIBUS ENUM. The obverse ricasso is blank, the reverse ricasso is stamped W. CLAUBERG in an arc above a knight in armor, with SOLINGEN in an arc below the knight. There is no leather washer on the blade. The brass hilt has an aged, medium chocolate patina. The knuckle bow is a tight at the pommel, allowing no deflection in the guard. The pommel cap is secure on the tang, the peen looks to have never been disturbed. The wooden grip is still covered in the original marine wrap, and it shows minimal wear from use. The double strand wire is still very tight to the grip. The shark skin covered scabbard is still very strong. There is one small scratch, just below the top mount on the back side of the scabbard, approximately 1/4" long. Overall the scabbard is in fantastic condition. The mounts are tight on the scabbard, and both still have the retaining screws. The drag also has the retaining screw, but is a little loose on the scabbard. The mounts and drag have some pretty elaborate engravings on them. The upper and lower mounts have a large floral etching both above and below the suspension ring. The drag continues on with the floral motif. This is a fantastic example of an imported Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword that is still solid enough to display on a mannequin!
