This is a coat size Eagle I button worn by the Union Infantry during the Civil War. This two piece button was manufactured by Scovill and back marked SCOVILL MF'G CO. WATERBURY. The shank is still present, but is bent to one side slightly. The face of the button shows a spread winged eagle facing to the right. In the left talon it clutches three arrows, while a laurel bough is in the right talon. A shield is on the eagle's chest with the letter I in the center. The letter I denotes the Infantry branch of arms. The face of the button retains almost all of the gold wash. This will make a very nice addition to your button collection.
