Belgian Made .54 Caliber Single Shot Percussion Conversion Pistol

This is a Belgian made copy of the US Model 1836 flintlock .54 caliber smoothbore pistols. The pistol has an overall length of 15 1/2", with a 10" round barrel. The barrel has attained an attractive, steel gray patina mottled with scattered age spots. The exterior of the barrel has a smooth surface with light pitting. Stamped near the breech is the Liege proof mark of ELG over a five point star, all with in oval. The front brass blade sight and oval rear sight cast into the barrel tang are both present. The bore gauges at .57 caliber and is still fairly bright, has no rust and just a couple of small pitted areas. The swivel type steel ramrod with button head is still with this old horse pistol. The iron barrel band has an inspector's proof mark, possibly a D. The back strap, integral with the breech plug, extends all the way down to the butt cap. All the iron hardware, barrel band, side plate, trigger guard, butt cap and back strap have a patina Matching the barrel. The mechanics of the lock work perfectly, but are just a bit on the weak side. The lock has been converted from flint to percussion, but the brass pan still remains. The lock is not marked or stamped in any way. The stock is in good condition, showing the usual dings and bumps from normal use. There are no cracks in the wood, all edges and barrel channels are very crisp. There are no inspector cartouches on the left side. The Model 1836 is often regarded as the best made, best performing US military flintlock handgun made. It was an improved version of the Model 1826, and the last U.S. military pistol produced using the flintlock ignition system. The Model 1836 flintlock pistol was the primary handgun issued to US Dragoons and Mounted Rifles during the Mexican War. Many were later converted to percussion and saw service in the Civil War. It is no surprise that the cottage industry of gunmakers in Belgium copy this very successful model of pistol. This Belgian made copy of the US Model 1836 flintlock pistol has been converted to percussion, and has a great look to it. This will compliment and muzzle loading pistol or Civil War collection.
