This is a letter written to Corporal James T. Biggs of Company C, the Downing Rifles, 3rd Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The letter was written on 22 February, 1862 by N. E. Biggs, brother of Corporal Biggs. The content of the letter is informing Biggs of the day to day events of life in Hinds County, Mississippi. The letter is one single sheet of paper, but is folded and written in four sections. It begins with by letting him know everyone is doing well except for "Ma", who has been feeling sick but is getting better. He speaks of a female named "Ms Anna" going to Raymond to have her "ambertype" to send to the corporal. He also mentions that his "Ma" is making him a pair of fancy pants that they dyed purple. A mention of having two cannon where the Corporal is located is also made. He also talks about the "Old Yankee whipping us in Kentucky and that they got Fort Donnelson and got 10000 prisoners." The Light Guards are reported to be leaving Bowling Green and heading to Nashville. Corporal Bigg's brother gives him as much information about the war as he knows, The remainder of the letter talks about people they both now and life in back in Hinds county. The envelope that the letter was sent in is addressed "Mr. J. T. Biggs/Downing Rifles/3rd Regt Miss Vol/Pap Christian/Miss." The hand writing is very clear and legible. There is no punctuation used in the letter, which makes it a little difficult to read at times. This is a very early war dated personal letter to a common soldier from Mississippi from his brother. It would really add greatly to a camp collection or document collection.
