This is a request for financial assistance to a Mr T.J. Earhiant from a W.C. Morrell. The letter measures 3 3/4" tall and 7 3/4" wide and is a light blue color. The letter looks to have a location of Fort Luitman and dated March 14th, 62. There was a US Army post known as Fort Quitman on the Texas-Mexican border just south of EL Paso that was garrisoned by a small 20 man detachment under the command of Second Lieutenant Zenas Bliss at the start of the Civil War. The detachment was ordered to evacuate the fort and was later captured. There is no evidence that Confederate troops ever garrisoned the fort. However, General Sibley's Confederate Texans passed through there enroute to the New Mexico campaign, and again after their defeat at Glorietta Pass, New Mexico. It is very possible that Morrell was a Confederate soldier passing through Fort Quitman on the 14th of March enroute to the Glorietta Pass battle that occurred 26-28 March, 1862. The letter states "Fort ?uitman March 14th 62/ Mr.T.J. Earhiant: Dear Sir/I wish you to pay F. Purser for me, as much money as you can. My family are much in need of it. I am about to remove them because I cannot come to city again during the war./ Yours/W.C. Morrell". The reverse side of the letter is blank. The letter is in very good condition, no rips or tears to the paper. The hand written ink is in very legible condition. This little letter is just over 157 years old and is in amazing condition. If you collect Civil War documents this will go well with your collection.
