Excavated Model 1816 bayonet recovered near Bowler's Mill Virginia. The cruciform blade measures 15 3/4", the socket 3" for an overall length of 18 3/4". The overall condition of the blade is a chocolate brown patina with pitting throughout. The socket still retains it's original shape, with the T mortise having only a slight chip missing at the bottom right corner. The US stamp is still recognizable, the inspectors initials may be EJ, they are a little hard to make out. For an excavated piece this one is still very strong and displays well. Bowler's Mill is near Gordonsville, Va, where Confederate General Stonewall Jackson went into camp in 1862. This is very likely a Confederate used bayonet given the location of the find. It will make a great addition to your excavated collection.
