This is a Lancet/Scalpel from the Civil War period. This dual purpose medical instrument was sold by Alfred Field & Company of Birmingham, England. The practice of bloodletting has been around since before 500 BC, and did not stop being a commonly used practice until the late 19th century. The lancet was a commonly used tool to perform the practice of bloodletting. It has been incorporated into the tip of a scalpel blade. The blade is marked on the obverse side with A.FIELD&CO/NEW YORK. The reverse side of the blade is marked with Field's trademark Progress. This instrument measures 6 1/4" in length, with the blade measuring 2 3/16" in length. The ebony rosewood handle is in good condition, with just a couple of small chips missing at the large end. The letter W or M has been carved into the end of the surgical instrument. This lancet/scalpel remains in very good condition and will make a nice addition to any Civil War period medical collection.
