This is a clip point single edged side knife made by John Lingard circa 1830-1850. The knife measures 11" overall, with a 6 3/4" blade. The blade still has a bright, non pitted appearance. It looks as this one may have been acid etched originally, but there are only scattered spots left now. The obverse ricasso is marked J. LINGARD/PEA CROFT/SHEFFIELD within a banner. The reverse ricasso is unmarked. The cross guard is a simple elliptical design of German silver. The grip is made of two ivory slabs secured by four German silver pins. The obverse grip is inlaid with three silver disc's, the reverse side is bare. The blade has a 1/8" spine, making it pretty sturdy for it's length. The blade is in good condition with small spots of oxidation. The grip has no chips, just two very small cracks at the bottom center pins. The leather scabbard is in very good condition and features German silver fittings. It shows use but remains in very good condition. There are plenty of Civil War period images with these type knives stuck in the belts of both Union and Confederate soldiers. This clip point side knife will make an excellent addition to any Civil War collection.
