This is a leather double pommel holster for the single shot US Model 1836 or Model 1842 percussion pistols, commonly referred to as "Horse Pistols". Each holster has an inside measurement of 12 1/2" long. The outer flaps are missing. There are no external ammunition tubes on either holster, and don't appear to ever had any. The russet brown leather shows wear from actual use, but remains in very good condition. All stitching remains tight and unbroken, to include the yoke connecting the holsters. The plugs are still present in each toe of the holster. These are constructed very similarly to the Model 1850 pommel holsters, but do have differences. There is no hole in the yoke to go over the pommel of the saddle. There are two slits in the leather on the reverse of each holster that were made to accommodate a leather strap. I suspect these straps were used to secure the holsters to the saddle. Unfortunately the straps are missing. I tried a Colt Navy revolver, and the holster just swallowed it. There are no markings on the holsters anywhere. This set displays well, and would dress up any saddle from the 1840's through the Civil War.
