This is a West Virginia issued medal for an honorable discharge from Civil War service. In 1866 the State of West Virginia authorized the minting of 26,000 medals for soldiers from the state who served in the Union Army. The medals were broken down into three different classes, Class I for honorably discharge, Class II for killed in battle and Class III for liberty. The medal is comprised of a header, ribbon and a medallion. Each medal has a soldier's name, rank and unit stamped around the rim. The header is in the form of a scroll, with the words HONORABLY DISCHARGED in raised letters on a lined field. Under the scroll are the intertwined letters WV, representing the state of West Virginia. The ribbon is red, white and blue and measure 1/14" wide and 2 3/4" long. The front of the medallion shows a figure of Lady Liberty standing on the right with both arms extended. She holds a laurel wreath in her right hand and a document in her left hand. On the left side is the figure of a soldier steeping forward to receive the document and crown of laurel. To the right of Liberty is an American eagle, to the left of the soldier is s shock of wheat. Below the figures in the center is the West Virginia state seal with the dates 1861 and 1865 on either side of it. Stamped into the rim of the medallion is the name of the soldier, ISAAC N. COOPER SADDLER CO. D 2nd REG. CAV. VOLs. The header and medallion have a beautiful deep bronze patina. The ribbon shows slight fraying along the bottom and at the upper right corner. Overall this state issued Civil War medal is in very good condition and will compliment any collection.
