This is a pair of non excavated brass horse harness buckle covers from the Civil War period. These buckle covers were stamped out of sheet brass. Some were plain, others, like this pair, had some type of decoration. This pair has a heart in the center of the cover. These covers were used for more than just decoration. They were placed over the adjustment buckles on the harness to prevent them from accidentally opening. They measure 1 7/8" in length and 1 11/16" at the widest point. One of the buckle covers is bent outwards slightly. They both have a nice chocolate patina, one a little darker than the other. These will display well with your Civil War Cavalry collection.
