This is a porcelain "Piano Baby" figurine imported from Japan by the Ardalt-Lenwile Company. This company was located in New York, and began working in the import business right after the end of WWII. They imported china-ware statuettes, figurines, tableware, dishes, bowls, cups, jars and vases from Japan. This figurine measures approximately 11" high. It is hand painted and shows great detail. The only problem with this girl "Piano Baby" is the little finger on her right hand. It has been broken off at the joint and only half remains. "Piano Babies" became popular near the end of the 19th century, the same time owning a piano became popular. For many families, their piano was their sense of accomplishment and something to be proud of. In order to keep such a large piece of furniture clean, many resorted to placing large shawls over them to keep them dust free. These porcelain figurines were placed on the shawls to keep them in place, and picked up the nickname "Piano Baby". This one dates from the 1950's-1960's and except for the one flaw is in remarkable condition. If you collect antique figurines this one will at a nice touch to your collection, especially if you have a piano!
