This is a full size 1st Pattern Spanish American War Veteran medal. It was issued to members of the United Spanish War Veterans organization. If you served during in Cuba, Puerto Rico or the Philippine Islands during the Spanish American War periods of 1899-1902 you were eligible for membership into the USWV. The medal is approximately 4" long and 1 1/2" wide. The header features an American eagle within a laurel wreath clutching the shield of victory. The ribbon has thirteen stars and thirteen stripes. At the bottom of the flag is an anchor with a cavalry saber crossed over a rifle and a cannon to represent all the branches of the service. Suspended from this is Spanish American War cross. Each of the four arms is stamped, with Cuba at the top, Porto Rico on the right, U.S.A. on the bottom and Philippine Islands on the left. In an arc in the center of the cross are the words SPANISH WAR VETERAN and the dates 1898-1902. On the reverse of the header is the number 35017. On the reverse of the cross the letters N, E, S and W are on the arms and the word United is in the center.
