This is a half stock Tennessee long rifle manufactured by N. Clark of Memphis, Tennessee circa 1850's. This percussion rifle measures 52" in length with a 36" octagon barrel. The barrel has a dark plum patina and has a smooth, pit free exterior. The barrel is retained by two escutcheons and two tang screws. The bore is .50 caliber and is dark, shows light rust and good rifling. The rear buck horn style sight was dovetailed into the barrel 12" forward of the breech, but the sight is broken off. The front sight is a brass blade design, also dovetailed into the barrel. The barrel is engraved with the name N Clark in cursive on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and breech plug. A single ramrod thimble is securely attached to the bottom of the barrel. The lock plate is engraved in two lines, Clark/Memphis Tenn, along with some simple floral embellishment forward and to the rear of the engraving. The mechanics of the lock work normally, but there is no half cock position, only full cock. The trigger guard, patch box, two piece butt plate, side plate, nose cap and escutcheon plates are made of brass. The all brass furniture gun has a matching patina. The right side escutcheon plate is broken and just over half of it is missing. It looks as though this one was probably cleaned quite some time ago, but has aged back in nicely. The wooden ram rod appears to be original to the gun. The stock is a medium brown color, and has a great look to it. It has been stained to look like curly maple. There are no areas of wood loss on the stock. The barrel channel edges are still very crisp. There are a couple of cracks in the stock, on the bottom and left side of the stock at the nose cap and extending from the butt plate on both sides. They are shallow and do not degrade the integrity of the stock. There are no visible repairs to the stock. This old smoke pole has been around since the mid 1800's and has managed to survive quite well. If you have a long rifle collection this one will compliment it well!
