This is a relic condition Model 1816 musket barrel, lock and partial stock that was recovered in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania area. The Model 1816 musket was manufactured at both the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories between 1816 and 1844. During that production period the two national armories put out around 675,000 muskets. They were .69 caliber smoothbore, flintlock weapons that saw service during the Mexican American War and the American Civil War. During the 1850's many of these muskets were converted by the armories using what is known as the cone in barrel conversion. This relic condition Model 1816 has been converted to percussion using the cone in barrel method. The barrel has been shortened from it's normal 42" length to 37", with the front sight no longer on the barrel. The condition of the barrel shows extensive rust and pitting along the entire length. The bore is also dark and severely rusted and pitted. The cone conversion is still present. The lock is still attached to the escutcheon plate by both screws. The tang screw is also still present, still securing the trigger assembly to the weapon. The lock has the same appearance as the barrel, with just traces of the "National Bright" finish showing through here and there. The lock is still present, and is frozen in the cocked position. The metal has not been stabilized, and shows active rust here and there. This one came into the shop with oral history of being picked up along Rock Creek near the base of Culp's Hill in the early 1900's. There is no documentation to support it, just verbal history. The exact location of the find will be released to the new owner. This goes along great with excavated relics, especially if you have items recovered from the Gettysburg area!
