This is a British Pattern 1853 Cavalry Saber imported for use during the Civil War. The saber measures 40" overall with a 34 1/4" blade. The blade is pretty beefy, having a 1/4" spine at the hilt. The blade has a 24 1/2" fuller and a 9 1/2" false edge. Several examples of this style sword are listed in Stewart Mowbray's book, "American Swords" on pages 20 through 22, as being Confederate used weapons. The true edge of the blade has no nicks or any other damage. It was originally a bright blade, and it still is! The blade retains over 95% of the original polish. There are just a couple of freckles of oxidation on the obverse side of the blade near the guard. There are no maker marks or stamps of any kind on the sword. The iron hilt has taken on a nice light brown patina. There are two branches on the right side and a small guard on the left side of the hilt. The grips are two leather slabs riveted on to the tang. The grips have held up remarkably well, with the reverse side having a crack at the single rivet. They are still very tight to the tang. The leather throat washer is still intact and on the blade. A correct Civil War period scabbard accompanies this very nice example P53 saber. It exhibits an overall brownish/steel gray appearance. There are several small dents on both sides of the scabbard. This is an opportunity to own a possible Confederate used import Cavalry saber at a very reasonable price!
