Three Commemorative American Battle Coins
Item #: AA3358
This is a group of three coins commemorating the Battles of New Orleans, Read Ridge and Wilson's Creek. The Battle of New Orleans took place from 8 - 26 January, 1815. This commemorative coin measures 1 3/4" across and is double sided. The front depicts American soldiers and volunteers around a cannon. All are firing into advancing British infantry. We all know how that turned out! On the reverse of the coin is "Like a stonewall General Andrew Jackson stood steadfast at the Battle of New Orleans, resisted the British assault of that city and added a victorious postscript to the war of 1812. The coin is in very good condition and displays well. The second coin commemorates the Battle of Wilson's Creek. It measures 1 1/2" across and is double sided. The front depicts a Confederate Infantryman firing his rifle in the standing position. In an arc around the perimeter of the coin it reads, "WILSON'S CREEK NATIONAL BATTLEFIED". The date of August 10, 1861 is to the left of the infantryman. On the reverse of the coin is a cannon in the center and around the perimeter of the coin, "THE SECOND BRIGADE CAMPAIGN" at the top and "FOUNDATION MEMBER" at the bottom. The third coin commemorates the Battle of Pea Ridge. This coin measures 2" across and is double sided. The front depicts crossed cannon tubes above an elk skull in the center. Around the perimeter of the coin it reads "PEA RIDGE" at the top and "NATIONAL MILITARY PARK" at the bottom. The reverse of the coin shows a two story building, the Elkhorn Tavern, in the center. Along the perimeter it reads, "THE BATTLE OF PEA RIDGE MARCH 7-8, 1862" at the top and "ELKHORN TAVERN" along the bottom. I'm not positive, but I believe these coins were sold by the National Park Service at these battlefields. They will make a nice little addition to any collection, especially the young collector just getting started.
