This is a Smith and Wesson Model #1 3rdd issue .22 caliber revolver. Approximately 131,163 of these revolvers were manufactured by Smith & Wesson between 1868 and 1881. The serial # of 57504 puts this one being manufactured in the early to mid 1870's. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the back strap and is very legible. This little pocket pistol measures 7" in overall length, with a barrel length of 3 3/16". The top of the round barrel is stamped "Smith and Wesson Springfield Mass. Pat. Apr. 3. 55. July 5. 59. Dec . 18. 60. The sights are fixed. This 7 shot revolver has a spur trigger. The cylinder is fluted and is not stamped. The gun was originally silver plated, but the majority of the plating has worn off, and the metal now displays a silverish/gray patina. The Mother of Pearl grips are in good condition, the left one has a small chip missing at the bottom. The mechanics of this little firearm have an issue. The cylinder does not advance when the hammer is cocked, but the cylinder does lock when the hammer is cocked. These little pocket pistols were popular with the river boat gamblers and others with less than honorable intentions! This one displays well, and can be repaired if the buyer wishes.
