This is a 1/2 plate ambrotype of a Petersburg, Virginia lady in mourning. The image shows her seated beside a small table. She is facing slightly to the left, with her right arm resting on the table. She is dressed in traditional mourning wear for the Civil War period, black veil and black dress. The clarity of the image is exceptional, so good that you can see the veins in the leaves of the flowers in the vase! Her front of her veil is laid back on top of her head, and appears to have a cord that runs under her chin. Her mourning broach and two bracelet have applied gilt and contrast well with the black garments she wears. She wears no gloves on her hands, and none are seen in the image. The small table she is seated by is covered with a simple, decorative setting. In the center of the table is a vase of flowers. The image resides in a half leatherette case that looks to have some new leather applied around the edges. An oval matt of gold and trimmed in blue accents the image very well. This is a very clear and crisp ambrotype image of an middle aged lady in mourning for a deceased member of her family, claimed by the Civil War. This is the second of two mourning images that came into the Charleston show. It looks as though both women are in the latter stages of mourning. One thing is for sure, both images were made in the same studio, the back drop, setting and matts are identical. Additional information is available pertaining to the image upon request.
