This is a Confederate Foot Officer's Sword manufactured by Thomas, Griswold of New Orleans, Louisiana. This firm produced swords for the Confederacy, as well as being a military retailer. They were in operation at the corner of Canal and Royal Streets from 23 August, 1861 until New Orleans fell to the Union in April of 1862. The saber measures 35" overall, with a 29 1/4" blade. The straight blade measures 1" wide at the hilt and has a flat spine width of 1/4" at the hilt and has a single 22 1/2" fuller. The blade has a dark steel gray patina mixed with some dark areas towards the tip. The reverse ricasso is stamped in two lines T.G & Co./N.O. for Thomas, Griswold & Company, New Orleans. The brass hilt and pommel cap both have a soft golden hue to them. The guard is in the classic Confederate design, using a rose pattern floral design on the right side of the guard. The pommel cap is decorated with a laurel leaf design on the forward edge. It is notched on the underside to accommodate the knuckle bow. All components of the hilt still retain a good amount of the original gilt. The tang peen is undisturbed. The wooden grip still retains the original leather wrap and twisted brass wire, both are tight to the grip. This rare sword still has it's original leather scabbard! The scabbard, made of black leather, is top stitched and is in very good condition. There is some crazing and a few spots of flaking, but overall it displays great. The brass mounts and drag have a mile deep mustard patina. The engraving work on all three brass pieces is incredible. If you are a serious Confederate sword collector, this one deserves a serious look!
