This is a mechanical cast iron bank made by the John C. Harper company in England circa 1900. It is a reproduction of the 1880's mechanical cast iron bank made by the J.&E. Stevens company. The bank measures approximately 6 1/2" tall, 4 3/4" wide and 3" deep. The bank retains the original paint, with minimal chipping in a couple of spots. The mechanics of the bank work perfectly. To operate the bank, a coin is placed in the right hand. A lever on the back of the left shoulder is depressed, causing the right hand to move to his mouth. As the right hand moves towards the mouth, his eyes roll back and his tongue recedes, allowing the coin to drop into the bank. On the bank the bank is stamped MADE IN ENGLAND. This is a wonderful piece of Black Americana and will compliment any collection.
