Edo Period Samurai Jingasa Helmet

This is a wooden Jingasa helmet used by the Japanese Samurai during the Edo period, between 1603 and 1868. The samurai wore the lightweight Jingasa while traveling or when in a camp setting. This one is made of wood and has a black lacquer finish on the outside, with the interior of the helmet having a the same black lacquer finish. A family Mon, or crest, is done in red on the front and back of the helmet. There are a few small cracks and areas of wood loss around the rim of the helmet. The interior of the helmet has some small areas of the lacquer flaking off, and one or to small chips. The cloth head pad and padded chin strap are missing from the helmet. The helmet has a diameter of 13 3/4". This Jingasa helmet is from the late Edo period, somewhere between the 1840's and the 1860's. It has some awesome display power and great eye appeal!
