This is a Grand Army of the Republic Veterans slouch hat from the post Civil War era. The UCV and GAR organizations were basically the very first veterans organizations. As the reunions grew in frequency and attendance many of the veterans took to wearing reproduction uniforms, if not their original uniforms from the war. This is a slouch hat from the 1940's worn by a Union veteran. The hat was manufactured by John B Stetson and carries the Royal De Luxe Stetson logo in the satin liner. The Stetson logo and style known as the Open Road can be found stamped in gold on the left side of the 2" brown leather sweatband. On the right side of the sweatband, also stamped in gold lettering, is "Especially Designed For MAURICE L. ROTHSCHILD & CO." Maurice Rothschild owned and operated a clothing store in Chicago from 1906 until his death in 1941. This gray felt hat is formed in the fashion of a fedora, a style popular during the 1940's. Sewn to the front of the hat is a navy blue oval backing with a gold laurel wreath attached. The hat has a 2 1/2" brim and a crown that is 4" tall and is a size 6 7/8". This veterans hat is in excellent condition, having no damage or stains what so ever. The last GAR Encampment was held in August, 1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Perhaps this hat was purchased for that reunion!
