This is a two piece California state seal button from the Civil War period. The back mark on the button is "SCOVILL MF'G CO. WATERBURY". The two piece domed button is in very good condition. The majority of the gilt remains, but has taken on a dull gold patina. The face of the button shows Goddess Minerva, who symbolizes California's quick movement to statehood. Above Minerva is the Greek word "EUREKA", which means "I have found it". Surrounding Minerva are sailing ships and a miner on her left, on her right a bear, sheafs of wheat and grapes. These are all symbols of California's history. The shank is still present and standing tall. This is a nice and rare piece for your California Civil War collection!
