This is a Confederate Gardner pattern wood canteen from the Civil War. This canteen, like most of the Gardner's, is made of cedar wood. It has a diameter of 7.20' and is 2 1/4" wide. The canteen shows very good construction, with the two iron bands holding the 12 wooden slats tight to the face plates. There is just a little play in a couple of the slats due to wood shrinkage of the years. All three sling guides are still present. The face plates show the circular marks from the lathe they were turned on. These canteens used a turned wooden spout with either a threaded or none threaded base. Apparently these were pretty easy to loose, as the majority of the ones you see don't have a spout. This canteen is no exception, all it has a is cork stopper to plug the hole. This is one of the first Civil War relics to come into the shop from the local area of north east Tennessee. It is in excellent condition, but unfortunately there is no history with it. Still, it would make a great addition to any Confederate collection.
