A series of tests was conducted at Bikini Atoll, 67 in all. This photograph is of "Test Able", which was used to determine the effects of a nuclear blast on Naval ships. A fleet of 78 ships, mostly captured during WWII, was anchored in the lagoon of the atoll. Some of the ships were loaded with animals to study the effects of the blast and radiation exposure. A 23 kiloton device was exploded 158 meters above sea level. The blast sank 5 ships and seriously damaged 14 others. Of the 57 animals on board ship, 1/3 were killed by the blast or lethal radiation doses.
