Early 1900's Stoneware Mortar & Pestle Acme Trade Mark

This is a stoneware mortar and pestle made by the Acme Company manufactured circa 1901 - 1906. The mortar measures 4 1/2" tall, is 7 3/8" wide across the top and is 4 3/16" wide across the foot. It is stamped ACME with TRADE MARK in an arc above and below the company name. The number 5 is also stamped in the bottom of the mortar. The mortar has no chips or cracks, but is pretty soiled and stained on the inside and outside. There is a pour/pestle rest made into one side of the mortar. The pestle measures 9" in length and shows wear from use, but is undamaged. It is also stamped with a number 5 on the stone end. There is an additional pestle that came with this set. It measures 9" in length and shows wear from use. The stone is loose on the wooden handle. It is stamped WEDGEWOOD 61 on the stone end. These mortar and pestles were used in Apothecaries to make medicines, grinding pill forms into powder. This will make a very nice office decoration for your local drug store or early medical collector.
