Civil War US Navy and Marine Corps Veterans Campaign Medal

This is a full size Civil War Navy and Marine Corps Campaign medal. It was first authorized 1905 to recognize those members of the United States Armed Forces who served during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865. The Navy and Marine Corps Civil War Campaign Medal was established by the Navy Department on 27 June, 1908 by Navy Department Special Order Number 81. This medal was intended for members of the Navy or Marine Corps who served between 15 April, 1861 and 9 April, 1865. The ribbon is blue and gray to represent the colors of the Union and Confederate armies. The medallion has two ironclad ships, two wooden ships, one of which is sinking. and a couple of aerial shell bursts on the front. In an arc across the top are the raised letters "THE CIVIL WAR" and in an arc along the bottom the dates 1861-1865. The two ironclads engaged in combat with each other are the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimac. This battle, the first between iron ships, took place at Hampton Roads, Virginia on 9 March, 1862. The reverse is stamped "UNITED STATES NAVY" in an arc at the top and "FOR/SERVICE" at the bottom over top of two laurel branches. In the center is a spread winged eagle perched on a fouled anchor. These campaign medals were produced by the government as well as private agencies. The government produced campaign medals are numbered, the private purchase ones were not. This medal is in good condition, with no damage to the ribbon or medallion, but the pin is missing.
