Excavated Hotchkiss Case Shot Lead Time Fuze Recovered from Cobb County, Georgia

This is an excavated lead time fuze for a Hotchkiss case shot shell recovered on private property in Cobb County, Georgia, near the site of the Battle of Kolb's Farm that took place on 22 June, 1864. This is considered to be one of the battles from the Atlanta Campaign. 14,000 Union soldiers from two Union Corps under the commands of Major Generals Joseph Hooker and John Schofield fought 11,000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood during this one day battle. Hood believed he had an opportunity to defeat the Union forces in front of him and ordered his entire corps to attack. The two Union Corps were deployed in good positions and inflicted heavy casualties on the Confederate forces. The result of the battle was a Union victory. Casualties reported by the Union were 250 killed, wounded, captured or missing, while Confederate losses were 1500 killed, wounded, captured or missing. This excavated time fuze will make the perfect piece for the beginning Civil War collector.
