This is a lithograph CDV of Union general Frederick W. Lander. During the early days of the Civil War Lander served with distinction while performing secret missions as a volunteer aide de camp on the staff of General George McClellan. He was promoted to Brigadier General of volunteers on 17 may, 1861 and served with General Thomas Morris during the battles of Philippi and Rich Mountain. Later General Lander was given command of a brigade in Charles Stone's Division of the Army of the Potomac. He was wounded in the leg in a small engagement at Edward's Ferry. After recovering from the serious leg wound he was given command of a Division in the Army of the Potomac. Lander's was tasked with protecting the upper Potomac River. His forces opposed Stonewall Jackson's Confederate army at Hancock, Maryland and forced Jackson to withdraw from the area. Around the 28th of February General Lander was stricken by a "congestive" chill, and on 2 March, 1862 he died of pneumonia. The CDV is in excellent condition with no tears, rips or blemishes of any kind. The image of Lander is very clear and contrasts well with the oval background. There is no back mark on this image. The image is in an acrylic case.
