This is a Model 1875 United States Marine Corps NCO sword. The sword measures 35 1/2" overall with a blade length of 30". The marine NCO sword was adopted in 1859 and was patterned after the US Army's foot officer sword of 1850. The blades on the 1859 models were polished bright but were not etched. In 1875 Marine Corps regulations authorized the etching of the blades, and that has been the standard ever since. This sword was produced by the William H. Horstmann & Sons company in Philadelphia. The obverse side of the blade is etched in four separate lines above the ricasso W.H./HORSTMANN/&SONS/PHILADELPHIA. The blade is etched with various stands of flags, wreaths, shields, swords and other military implements. Near the center is an eagle and the banner with EPLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse side of the blade are etched the magical letters USMC near the center of the blade. On either side of the lettering are more shields, swords, wreaths and other patriotic items. The blade has a 23" fuller and a 13" false edge and is 1 1/8" wide at the ricasso. The edge is free of nicks or dings. The blade has a dull gray patina with scattered age spots near the end of the blade. The brass hilt, very similar to and 1850 foot officers hilt, has a dark mustard patina. The original leather wrap shows honest wear, but is in very good condition. The two strand brass wire wrap is undamaged and still very tight to the grip. The pommel and cap are unmolested, this thing has been together since the day the Horstmann's put it together! If you collect marine Corps memorabilia this would make a great addition to your collection.
