This is a large stoneware mortar and pestle from the late 1800's. The mortar and pestle is associated with use in both the medical field and in food preparation. The size of this one identifies it as being used to prepare food. The mortar is 8" high, 3 3/4" across the bottom and 8 1/2" across the top. The opening is 5 1/4" across and the preparation bowl is 5 1/2" deep. While the mortar is stoneware, the pestle is wooden. It measures 9 1/4" in length and is 2" across the grinding surface. The mortar is a greenish brown color and has a glazed surface. This seems to be a common combination for the stoneware coming out of Tennessee and North Carolina in the mid to late 1800's. This will make a nice decoration for your kitchen.
