This is a framed oil painting on cloth of the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota by Native American artist Joseph Broken Rope. Joseph Broken Rope was born in 1944 and died in 2005. He painted traditional Native American dancers in watercolors. However this is an oil painting done on cloth. The framed picture measures 29 3/4" wide and 23 3/8" high. The painted cloth measures 22 1/2" wide and 14 1/4' high. The frame shows some wear along the bottom and at all four corners. It doesn't detract from the beauty of the night scene depicted in the painting at all. The cloth has fringe on three sides. The cloth has been painted an antique white color for a base. In the center of the cloth with a black border is a moonlit scene on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The picture is painted to impose the reservation scene over a crossed war hammer and a peace pipe. To the top and bottom and bottom of the lake side scene are symbols in black, blue, yellow and red. Unfortunately I do not know what these symbols represent. The artist signed his name in oil paint at the bottom of the war hammer. I am not sure of the age of this painting, but there are some small cracks in the paint. Again, nothing to take away from the eye appeal of the art, just mentioned for accuracy. If you have your home or office decorated in Native American decor then this would go along nicely.
