This is a cartridge box tin from the Civil War era. The tin measures 3 3/4" wide, 4 1/2" tall and a depth of 1 1/2". This tin was made to accommodate .58 caliber paper cartridges. It still retains a bright finish and shows no damage what so ever. There is one lower compartment and one upper compartment, each capable of holding 10 rounds. The edges of the tin have been turned down and soldered to prevent the cartridges from being torn. Here is a fine example of the most basic piece of equipment every soldier in the war was familiar with.
