This is a set of 1st Lieutenant of Artillery shoulder straps. These are Civil War era and could very possibly have been worn during the Indian War period. They measure 3 3/4" in length and 1 1/4" wide. The backs are black felt with the center being open. The front of the straps have a red felt center to indicate the Artillery branch. A false gilted greyish material with gold trim provides the border for the straps. The edges of the gilt have a gold border. Each end of the strap has a single bar of the false gilt trimmed in gold to indicate the rank of 1st Lieutenant. There is no moth damage to either of these shoulder straps. They were intended to be sewn onto the uniform, but I'm not sure these were ever used. There is a slight spot of discoloration to one of the straps by the single bar. The same strap is missing part of the gold trim on the border. These are as close to mint as your going to find. Another opportunity to own a fantastic Artillery piece for your collection or display.
