This past month has been incredible Confederate walk ins! Now we have a very rare Tredegar Iron Works bayonet in the shop. This one came in with oral history of being an early battlefield pick up. Unfortunately that's about all the history they knew. The condition of this bayonet is good. The non fluted blade shows a moderate amount of surface pitting. The socket also has a moderate amount of pitting, but the locking ring still rotates freely. The locking ring still has the original screw reporting for duty. The overall length of the bayonet is 20 3/4", with the socket measuring 3" and the blade a full 17 3/4". The "Tregedar" socket bayonet is accepted as the most common Confederate manufactured angular bayonet. It was believed for years that these bayonets were produced exclusively at the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Va. Now it is believed that they may have been made at Raleigh, North Carolina while others believe they were made at the Confederate Armory in Richmond, Va. Either way, they are definitely Confederate made. The blade is triangular with no flutes. Being made of iron, they usually don't survive long in the ground. That accounts for the overall good condition of this one. These bayonets were made in several configurations and calibers. This one fits a .58 caliber pretty well. Non dug Tregedar bayonets don't come along everyday. Round out your CS edged weapon collection with this one!
