A piece of a Confederate battle flag captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The remnant measures approximately 4 1/2" high by 3 1/2" wide, but is irregularly shaped. The silk fabric still retains a vibrant blue appearance. The hand painted gilt star is in fantastic condition. On the star in period ink is the inscription "Piece of Confederate flag captured by member of 52nd N.Y. at Gettysburg Penn." The 52nd New York was part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the 2nd Corps. They arrived at Gettysburg later on the first day of battle and were positioned on Cemetery Ridge on the 2nd of July, 1863. It was here that they helped stop the attack of Confederate Major General Richard Anderson's Division of Lieutenant General A.P Hill's III Corps. Confederate infantry units involved in that action were Brigadier General Cadmus Wilcox's Alabama brigade, Brigadier General William Mahone's Virginia brigade, Brigadier General Ambrose Wright's Georgia brigade, Colonel David Lang's Florida brigade and Brigadier General Posey's Mississippi brigade. All of these units mentioned were hard fighting veterans of three years of combat. Here is an opportunity to own a piece of history from the most iconic battle of the Civil War!
