Springfield Cadet Rifle with 1884 lock plate. The overall length of this weapon is 48 7/8". The barrel measures 29 9/16" and has no proof marks. The bore is still bright with no pitting. It is equipped with an 1873 breech assembly stamped Model/1873/Eagle/Crossed Arrows/US. Serial number stamping is 30492, indicating an 1874 production date. The firing pin spring is missing from the assembly. The lock plate is stamped US over 1884 and is equipped with a three position tumbler. The hammer is of the first type with the coarse knurling. The front sight is of the one piece constructed base and sight blade that is silver soldered to the barrel. The rear sight assembly is a combination of 1879 "Buck Horn" carbine a rifle components. The base is stamped with a C and is marked up to 600 yards with 25 yard graduations. The markings are on the left side of the base. The leaf sight is stamped with an R on the left side and is marked up to 1200 yards with 50 yard graduations. It is of the fourth form, making it rare as they were produced for a short time period. The walnut stock measures 45 5/8" from butt plate to nose cap. There are no visible cartouches on the stock. The butt plate is of the narrower type used on the cadet rifles. A crack runs approximately 5 1/2" long on the left side of the stock opposite the lock plate. The left side of the stock has an old paint number 24, probably a rack number. Someone also carved the initials KSC by the rack number. The wood shows a lot of handling wear and many dings throughout. The ramrod measures 32 3/4" and is stamped with the number 128. The front barrel band has both the sling and stacking swivels. It is stamped with the large letter U. The lower barrel band has the small letter u stamp. The trigger is round and smooth. The trigger guard bow has a sling swivel that is secured by a screw. A late type military academy weapon that has seen it's fair share of drill and ceremony!
