27th New York National Guard militia Shako style hat. The 27th New York was mustered into active service from 21 May 1861 through 21 May 1863, when it returned to New York. The makers label in the top of the hat dates this particular item after the regiment returned to New York. The label shows Baker & McKinney, 141 Grand St, New York. The firm did not come into existence until 1864, after the 27th mustered out of active service. All that being said, this one is in fantastic shape! The body shows no damage and very little wear. The tarred leather top is in near mint condition, with only two small flaws. The chin strap and adjustment loop are present and have no flaws. The tarred brim is intact and fully attached. The unit badge has a beautiful dark patina, complimented by the Excelsior buttons in the same condition. A black Pom Pom is displayed with the hat. The label inside the top of the hat also shows it belonged to a Captain Sauvan, Co A 27th. This one most likely is an Indian Wars era Shako. It displays great and would do justice to any war room.
